Import your ChatGPT and Claude conversations
Move your chat history from ChatGPT, Claude, or another Deni AI account into Deni AI.
You can bring your past conversations into Deni AI from an export file. Each conversation becomes a regular chat in your sidebar.
You can import from:
| Source | File to upload |
|---|---|
| ChatGPT | conversations.json from your ChatGPT data export |
| Claude | conversations.json from your Claude data export |
| Deni AI | The JSON file from a Deni AI account export |
Guest accounts can't import. Sign in first.
Get your export
- Request a data export from the service's settings.
- When it's ready, download it and unzip it.
- Find
conversations.jsoninside.
Upload conversations.json itself, not the ZIP file.
To export from Deni AI, see Data and privacy.
Upload the file
- Open Settings › Import.
- Click Choose file and pick the JSON file.
- Wait for the import to finish. You'll see "Imported N chats (N messages)."
The imported chats appear in your sidebar right away.
What's imported
| Item | What happens |
|---|---|
| Titles | Kept. A conversation with no title becomes "Imported Chat 1", "Imported Chat 2", and so on. |
| Dates | The original created and last-updated dates are kept, so imported chats sort among your older chats. |
| Messages | Your messages and the assistant's replies are imported as text. ChatGPT code blocks stay as code blocks. |
| Edited or regenerated messages | Only the latest branch of each conversation is imported. Earlier versions are left out. |
| Claude's thinking | Imported as the reply's reasoning. |
| Tool calls and tool results | Left out. |
| Images and attached files | Left out. A note such as [image attachment omitted] or [attachment omitted: file name] marks where they were. |
| Text Claude read from a document | When the Claude export includes the document's text, it's imported as [Attached file: file name] followed by that text. |
Imported chats aren't added to a project. A Deni AI export contains only the text of each message, so that's what you get back.
Limits
- One file of up to 25 MB.
- Up to 20,000 conversations and 200,000 messages per file. Message parts, such as Claude attachments, also count toward the 200,000.
- Up to 5 imports per hour.
An import is all or nothing. If it fails, no chats are added.
Importing the same file twice
Importing twice creates duplicates
Imported chats are added to your account, not merged with existing ones. If you import the same file again, you get a second copy of every chat. Delete the copies you don't need from the sidebar.
Troubleshooting
"That file isn't valid JSON."
The file isn't a JSON file. Unzip the export and upload conversations.json, not the ZIP file.
"No conversations found to import."
The file doesn't contain any conversations Deni AI can read. Check that you picked conversations.json and not another file from the export.
Warnings after the import
Conversations with no usable messages (for example, ones that are empty or contain only tool output) are skipped. They're listed under the warnings, by their position in the file.
An error says the data is too large
The file is over 25 MB, or it has more than 20,000 conversations or 200,000 messages.
"Too many requests. Please try again later."
You've imported 5 times in the last hour. Wait and try again.
"Import failed."
Something else went wrong, and nothing was imported. Try again. If it keeps failing, contact us.
