Memory and projects

How Deni AI remembers things about you, and how projects give a group of chats shared instructions.

Memory and projects both give the AI context you don't have to repeat.

  • Memory: short facts about you, such as your name, language, or preferences. They're used in all your chats.
  • Projects: a group of chats with shared instructions and a default model.

Memory

What gets saved

There are two kinds of memories:

KindHow it's added
AI addedAfter the AI replies, Deni AI looks at your recent messages in that chat and saves lasting facts about you.
You addedYou type it yourself in Settings › Personalize.

Automatic saving looks for things that stay true: your name, language, role, tools you use, and preferences you always want. It's meant to skip one-off tasks, passing questions, greetings, and secrets such as passwords. It saves at most 3 memories per reply, and skips anything already covered by a saved memory.

Saving runs in the background after the reply finishes. When something is saved, you'll see "Saved to memory" with a View button.

Each memory can be up to 240 characters. Guest accounts don't save memories.

How memories are used

Your saved memories are added to every chat as background. The AI uses them when they're relevant and doesn't mention them unless you ask.

View, add, and delete memories

Open Settings › Personalize. Your memories are under Saved Memories.

  • Add: type in "Add something Deni should remember about you" and click Add.
  • Find: use Search memories, or filter by All, AI added, or You added.
  • Delete one: click the trash icon next to it.
  • Delete all: click Clear all memories. This can't be undone.

You can't edit a memory. Delete it and add a new one instead.

Turn off memory

Turn off Auto-save memories under Response Style on the same page. The change is saved right away.

Turning off auto-save keeps your saved memories

With Auto-save memories off, the AI stops adding new memories, but the ones already saved are still used in your chats. To stop the AI from using them, delete them or click Clear all memories.

Response style and instructions

The same page has settings that apply to every chat:

  • Tone, Friendliness, Warmth, and Emoji: how the AI writes. These save as soon as you pick one.
  • Instructions: anything the AI should always follow, up to 4,000 characters. Click Save after editing.

Projects

A project groups chats and gives them shared context. Each project has:

SettingWhat it does
NameUp to 80 characters.
DescriptionOptional, up to 240 characters.
Custom instructionsTell the AI how to behave in this project: goals, tone, constraints, output format. Up to 4,000 characters.
Default modelNew chats in this project start with this model. You can still switch per chat.

The project's name, description, and custom instructions are given to the AI in every chat in the project. Your memories and personalization still apply too.

Create a project

  1. Open Settings › Projects.
  2. Click New project. The new project opens.
  3. Fill in the settings and click Save.

Start a chat in a project

  • On the chat home screen, pick the project from the project menu under the message box (it shows No project by default). Then send your message.
  • Or open the project and click New chat.

The project page lists your chats in that project.

Archive and delete projects

  • Archive: click Archive on the project page, or the archive icon in Settings › Projects. Archived projects move to Archived. You can't start new chats in them, and their instructions are no longer used.
  • Restore: click Restore next to an archived project.
  • Delete: archive the project first, then click the trash icon next to it under Archived. This can't be undone.

Deleting a project doesn't delete its chats. They stay in your chat list without a project.

Plans

Memory and personal projects are available on every plan.

Sharing a project with a team needs a paid team plan. On a team without one, the team shows as "(paid team plan)" and can't be picked. See Pro for Teams.

Team projects

  • If you're on a team, pick Personal or the team next to New project before you create it. You can change it later under Team sharing on the project page.
  • Only the project's creator can change its team sharing, or make it Only you again.
  • Team members get the project instructions and default model. Their chats stay private.
  • Only team owners, admins, or the project's creator can edit a team project.
  • If the team plan ends, projects already shared stay usable.
